Insight - Jobs on the rocks

has anyone seen the article on the register website
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/51/35211.html
Looks like a story is brewing up there in Sheffy.
They say that between them and Plusnet they have employed about 400 staff in
total. I'm not sure if Plusnet are linked to this as Insight are the parent
company.

There's usually no smoke without fire. If you look at the plusnet
webcamera's they only have a few staff on show most of the time especially
in their support teams (look at it during the day on the following IP
195.166.137.248 - just put it in the address portion of your web browser)

A couple of friends of mine have worked there and went through a period of
people leaving regularly so how they will get to 1700 if that's a correct
number is anyone's guess.

Too many companies these days get grants to set up with the promise of jobs
only for them to go without achieving anywhere near the staff numbers
proposed so I do hope this doesn't turn out to be the same. Only time will
tell I guess.

Sue

There's a small thread on this running in free.uk.talk.Sheffield.
The Star's original article is here online -
http://www.sheffieldtoday.net/viewar...e=Results.aspx

It's an interesting piece and does beg the question not just of Insight but
many other companies who set-up shop with massive funding, "where is the
stringent control that ensures companies deliver on what they promise or
agree to".

Copied and pasted that to some folk I know working there - just in case they
haven't seen it...
Reading between the lines doesn't look good though, does it?

Not sure m8 to be honest but one things for sure the proof will be in the
pudding - Can Insight afford to increase headcount to the levels projected -
probably not, and if in two years they have hit 300 staff are we looking at
a further ten to see the rest?

There's a lot of grant "investment" in that company.

I think they could do with improving their "web presence" i.e. better
advertising, because I can't say that you see much advertising elsewhere.
To increase headcount means increasing revenue - which without decent
advertising, is hopeless in their cutthroat business these days...

perhaps they wish to fail then the parent US company can have a nice tax
deduction for the funding they will be pushing to the UK branch of which a
chunk will fund some of the Parent company's smaller European projects no
doubt thus saving some costs there.

"AOL for Dummies" is kind of redundant, don't you think?

Ummm you don't think that the salaries on offer might have something
to do with it? :-D

I'm sure it's a fairly accurate reflection John ;-)
£6000 even for Part Time - Come on it's an insult to the folk of Sheffield.
