just a brief report of my initial step into wireless g
i went for the linksys wrt54g-uk router in the end, a cable/dsl wireless
g router suitable for ntl/telewest type setups - it is replacing a dlink
di-604 that has been doing stirling work as a wired only cable router
initial install of router was fairly painless ... i gave it the same mac
address as the dlink so didnt need to add mac address to telewests
systems as this is something they require and set it to same lan ip
address settings already setup ... everything fine
speed was a slight concern at first even through wired connection as i
was only getting downloads of 60-80k compared to 120k with the dlink but
turned out was just the sites i was testing with as i then got several
full speed downloads equal to the dlink
tested the firewall with grc.com and couple of others - full stealth
then install of wpc54g-uk wireless pcmcia card in notebook ... install
painless but it then wouldnt connect to the router ... went through
various settings but woudlnt connect, it could see the router but not
connect ... anyway, i had set the router to wireless G only and changing
this to mixed (g & b) solved it, connected straight away ... odd as it
should have connected, something to look at another time, especially as
when connected in the mixed said was full 54 connection ...
situated 1 metre from the router signal strength and quality were max
100% and worked fine so then tested it further away ..... took laptop
downstairs to other side of house at a table i will most likely be using
it more often from and the signal quality and strength there is good 40
- 50% and the inernet and wireless lan connection works well from that
location which is only a few metre's from the garden - roll on good
weather next year!!
so far, seems good ... will have to see how it fairs over the next few
weeks, the dlink router i had was very stable and rarely required a
thought - so will be interesting to see how this one compares over time
