Incredibly Slow SBS2003 Network

Firstly I'm not a network expert in any capacity but we
just installed a new server running SBS2003.

The performance usage is less than 1% for both CPU and
Memory and yet opening a simple Access DB is taking up to
30 seconds (on the previous Novell server - pentium 90 to
boot! - it took less than a second). There are just 7
people uasing the server atm.

Even a separate peer-to-peer network of 4 pcs has gone
impossibly slow since installation...

Has anyone any ideas whats causing this, in not-so-
technical terms for me?

Thanks

Adrian

It probably isn't the SBS server itself, at least as far as Windows
Networking is concerned, especially since it is also effecting the 4 host
peer-to-peer network which is independent and has nothing to do with the SBS
server.

It sounds to me like something is saturating the network, like a virus,
maybe like Welchia. Are the Hub or Switch lights blinking like crazy all the
time? When you installed the SBS server,...if you didn't patch it for the
RPC issue,...and if it is exposed to the Internet,...then it could easily be
infected,...it can happen almost instantly as soon as the machine goes
"live".

They are not blinking particularly quickly and the server
only accesses the internet via a draytek router which is
firewalled.

Thing is, I don't know what is 'normal' looking activity
on the router(s) but it has definately been on a go slow
since introducing the SBS onto the network.

Will have a look around for virus' and see how it goes.

Thanks

Adrian

Slow is a relative term and the worst to try to solve. You could try to find
out if it is truely a "speed on the wire" problem or some kind of resolution
problem. Fine a big FAT jucy file (maybe a whole CD) and copy it from one
machine to another. If it copies at about the same speed it would have in
the past then your system is not slow, and it may be a resolution problem
where there is a longer than usual delay before the data actually begins to
flow which creates the "illusion" of being slow.

That is just a guess. "Slow" is much harder to fix than something that just
flat won't work at all.

Make sure that the NICs on all servers & workstations are set to a specific
speed/duplex setting, not using autosense. Are you using a hub or a switch?

If your DNS is not set up correctly your network will be extremely slow.
Do you know if it is set up correctly?
