Increasing the range of an 802.11G wireless router

I have installed and am successfully running Linksys' WCG200
Wireless-G Cable Gateway at my home. Just got a new laptop which I
would like to use upstairs in my bedroom using the wireless
connection. Either I am in a dead spot, or bordering on a very weak
signal up in my bedroom (altogether about 40 feet away as the crow
flies from the wireless router on the first floor). I would like to
find a device which I can use to repeat / boost the signal coming from
the Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateway - preferably without having to
run additional cables back to the gateway.

Seemingly Linksys does not offer any sort of signal
amplifier/repeater. Is there any device available that I can just
plug in and boost the weak signal that will work with Linksys'
products? Additionally, the Linksys gateway (like many of Linksys'
devices), have dual antennas - is there a preferred method of pointing
the antennas which may increase the signal in and of itself? And
furthermore, will I get bet coverage if mount the Wireless-G Cable
Gateway up high as opposed to leaving the gateway on my desk - does it
really make that big a difference?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide me.

My setup is the opposite. The router is upstairs in a bedroom, and I'd
like to use the laptop downstairs in the living room.

The signal coming from the antenna is shaped like a donut. You may need to
orient the antenna at an angle so the laptop is within the donut.

You can easily add a corner reflector to give better signal strength in the
direction you need.

http://www.freeantennas.com I like the EZ-10.

Get a better wireless card or a better AP. 200mw vs the typical 50mw.

I believe that a Linksys WAP11 in Repeater mode will do what you want.

Ron Bandes, CCNP, CTT+, etc.

Router here sitting on top of a 6' high cabinet made a significant
difference.

Recently changed the laptop pc card to one with an antenna jack - clipped a
little $25 blade antenna to the top of the display, jumped signal in one
weak spot from 26/30% up to 46/55% and 93/100% everywhere else where it was
around 75/85% at best.
