How to Increase Signal Strength on Belkin Wireless 54g

I am looking for a way to increase the signal strength of my Belkin
wireless router (54g). I currently live on the top floor (3 story
Garden Style) of an apartment buliding (305 in diagram) and I'm trying
to find an easy way to receive a signal in the unit that is downstairs
and accross the hall (302--which would be beneath 304 in the diagram).

Currently, if I go downstairs and remain in the stairwell, then I can
get a "good" signal. Once I go inside the downstairs apartment, I
lose the signal (which is understandable).

-------------------|B|------------|B|---------------|
| |R| Open |R| |
| Apt. 305 |I| Stairwell |I| Apt. 304 |
| |C| |C| |
| |K| |K| |
-----------------------------------------------------

The biggest obstacles (I think) are the brickwalls that outline the
stair well. I really don't want to run any wires nor do I wish to
place anything on the balconies....any suggestions?

TIA

You could try directional antennas. However, if you put such on your WAP
you may/probably would lose signal coverage in your upstairs apt. If you do
this, put a directional antenna on both ends.

Ethernet cable connecting the two units (perhaps out the windows??) or
directional antennas out windows - if there is LOS between the units would
be the best bet.
