You could try directional antennas. However, if you put such on your WAP
you may/probably would lose signal coverage in your upstairs apt. If you do
this, put a directional antenna on both ends.
Ethernet cable connecting the two units (perhaps out the windows??) or
directional antennas out windows - if there is LOS between the units would
be the best bet.
