Inconsistent Remote Desktop connection through VPN

Remote Desktop works great on LAN, but when through VPN
RD is very inconsistent.
During the same VPN instance I may be able to connect,
disconnect, and then receive the following error message
when I try to reconnect, "The Client could not connect to
the remote computer. Remote connection might not be
enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new
connections. It is also possible that network problems
are preventing your connection." This error message also
applies to the first attempt at connection then later the
server has no problems. It is very "hit and miss" and
not limited to anyone server.

What kind of a VPN is it? PPTP? L2TP? Are the VPN endpoints running
Microsoft operating systems? If so what o/s and what service pack? Do you
use the VPN for anything else besides Remote Desktop? If so any problems?

I am having similar problems when I try connecting through
the Windows 2003 Server https://www.website.com:8098
remote service under the maintenance subdirectory. I just
posted my problem and was wwondering if anyone else is
experiencing this as well. It looks like we are in the
same boat. Have you gotten your service to work?
