incomplete wireless connection

Hi

I have a wireless network comprising 3 desktops and a laptop connected and
sharing an internet connection via a Netgear wireless router

I've just tried connecting a new laptop to the router and although it
recognises the router and gets a signal, it says the connection is missing
or incomplete

It's a long time since I set the other machines on the network up, and I
have a feeling I may have missed something

The procedure I used was:

1. Open the router's browser based control panel

2. Add the laptop's network mac address to the list of allowed PCs

3. Assigned a WEP number and set that up on the laptop

Any ideas?

Thanks

Pete

Are you running DHCP on the router?

I'm not sure, but if I am, I haven't set it up myself

On almost every router (someone's going to prove me wrong in this
statement!) DHCP is turned on by default; you need to make a conscious
effort to turn it off. Unless you've got a good reason to turn it off and
allocate static IP addresses for each PC, I'd leave it on - that way you can
take you PC (if it's a laptop) to any network and it will automatically be
given an IP address that will work on that network.

Reasons for using static IP addresses are: if you are connecting a server
that needs a route to it from the outside, or if you have problems accessing
shared drives/printers between different versions of Windows (though I run a
mixed Windows XP and Windows 98 network and I've never had any problem with
dynamic addresses).
