Hi

I phoned up BT today (150) to request premium rate barring on my line and
also incoming calls barred and they said I could have one or the other. (Not
both)

Why is it not possible to have both?

Secondly would Broadband ADSL still work with incoming calls barred?

Mark

These are separate select services.

I don't think it is - try again.

It is possible with just Call Barring on your line. I have barred calls
to premium rate numbers on my line (just one of several barring options
that can be chosen). There are verbal explanations on 0800 789 456 of
the call barring options and there was a PDF showing star codes, etc,
online, but it has moved from the last URL I had for it (can anyone
help locate the "systemxy.pdf" on the bt.com website ?)

I routinely block incoming calls (however the caller receives a voice
announcement that I am "not accepting calls at this time" - implying
they can call later, which will do them no good :-) A line with all
incoming calls barred does, I think, gives a clear announcement that
no calls will be taken, or a tone that implies the number is unusable.

There's no problem with using ADSL on the same line, with or without
incoming calls.

There are a multitude of options available (I think two for blocking
incoming calls, and two for barring premium numbers), so the person
in BT Customer Services could easily have been confused :-) Peter

Premium rate barring is a "free" service.

any URL from the Price List please ?

My guess is you are meaning the "block access to sex chatlines" which was
introduced a number of years ago after family phone bills were hit from
0898 calls, but it is possible to use one of the call barring options
to block premium rate calls (I set this up on one line and checked it
was still operational this morning before posting). Peter M.

The PDF can now be found from www.bt.com/callingfeatures which takes
you to the select services section. It appears as a link on a number
of pages (at the very bottom) once you select a service of interest.

Call barring is shown as being charged at £1.50 per month in most
cases. This is of course customer controlled barring. To bar calls
to premium rate numbers using the customer controlled call barring
service, the code is *347#.

The blanket premium rate call bar which blocks all 09x and 118xxx
numbers is free of charge.

I use the blanket, exchange controlled, method for maximum protection.

The only barring "package" showing on my phone bill reads:

"Premium rate service call barring 0900 - 0909"

So I guess that the 118 barring would show as a "package" on your phone bill if I
had it.

Probably well worth ordering if it's free.

I have exactly the same showing on my bill - however when I try to
call 118xxx services those calls are also barred. BT customer
services advised me (some time ago) that 118xxx would be treated as
premium rate for the purpose of this bar due to the "unusual" call
charges and the option of "call connect" services.

I had someone from BT call me today actually warning me about 118 "call
connect" and how businesses can be affected by employees using it to make
personal mobile calls on the company's bill, as it would just show the
118xxx number on the bill rather than the actual mobile number they were
connected to. They have aparently introduced a special 118 number where
"call connect" is not possible to protect businesses from this happening.
