Inability to open "My network Neighborhood"

Windows 98 - Came with Campaq 1690 (N-Book)

I installed network adapters for both my PC and notebook.

When I click on "My network neighborhood"on the notebook
I get an icon called "Entire Network". When I click on it
I get the notation: "Unable to browse the Network. The
network is not accessible".

In Microsoft's site I found the Microsoft Base Article
238853 which states that for the "Resolution" of the
problem a "supported fix is NOW available from
Microsoft...". (meaning it did not come w. the original W-
9). And then it says to contact Microsoft Product Support
Services. This, I did but could not get the "update" to
the "fix" because the registration number for Windows 98
was not accepted. I got the number by right-clicking
on "My computer", and then clicking on "General". I
imagine this happened because the computer came with W98
and I did not purchase it separately.

Compaq support has not been able to help me get the fix.
First, they suggested to re-install W-98 which I did and
did not work. Their last suggestion was to enter the
product number in the sticker that came with the
computer. This did not work at all.

I would appreciate your informing how to get the "updated"
("supported")fix in order to solve my problem.

Regards
