Yes, what you want it's possible.
If the client in the laptop it's XP then you probably need pptpclient
or OpenVPN on both sides. If it's Linux you can choose between OpenVPN
(very easy to install) or OpenS/WAN (complicated, but can work with a
great variety of devices), on both sides.
