The 700 is autosensing: it works with straight and
crossover cables (BTW, straight cables are usually used
to connect to routers, and crossover only for direct
connections between two computers). It's probably a
software misconfiguration on the Mac.
Can you ping 192.168.2.1? If this fails, the cable might
be broken or not well inserted.
Otherwise make sure the iMac is in the router subnet of
192.168.2.x. Typically the settings should be to use a
dynamic IP, that it gets from the 192.168.2.1 gateway,
uses 192.168.2.1 as DNS server, and the mask is
255.255.255.0.
Finally check if you haven't set any MAC filtering on the
router.
