Hi,

I know nothing about computer networking. I just joined this forum because i want to teach myself "computer networking" and i know i will need guidance and words of wisdom I am a very good computer programmer though (C/C++, Java, Perl ...)

I have found a few links on Google.

Is there a course/website/tutorial you would recommend for a beginner?
Where will i start doing the cool cool stuffs? I don't even know what i mean by "cool stuff" But, i think i mean "the kinds of things i see on TV"

Thank you for your help

Herve

What is your goal. Saying I want to learn computer networking is like saying I like sandwiches. That's great but what specific type. Do you want to learn basic home networking between a modem, router, and a couple users? Do you want to learn about Active Directory and Windows Server Domains w/ DHCP and DNS?

I guess the simple question to answer is what do you want to learn and for what purpose? If you are looking for a hacking forum, this isnt it.

Well! Hervebags says he knows nothing about Computer networking. Lets not ask him about his goal but instead let us start with a simple Networking Tutorial.

Mr. Hervebags!!

What is a computer network?

A set of computers that are connected together is called a network. The network of computers enables communication (i.e. sharing files and folders, mailing, etc) between the computers. For example consider a Local Area Network in a college which inter-connects computers, servers, printers, scanners and different departments.

Advantages of Computer Networks

File Sharing: Networks offer a quick and easy way to share files directly, instead of using a disk or USB key to carry files from one computer or an office to another.
Cost: Individually licensed copies of many software's are expensive, but Network enabled versions are available at lesser cost.
Resource Sharing: All computers in the network can share resources such as printers, fax machines, modems, and scanners.
Flexible Access: Networks allow their users to access files from any computer in the network. This means that a user can begin work on a project on one computer and finish up on another. Multiple users can also work on the same project using the network.
Internet Telephony: By using this feature one can make real-time voice, fax and even video calls over the Internet. Many small businesses are experimenting with Internet telephony, mainly because it can significantly reduce telecommunications costs. Some of the related terms are voice over IP (VoIP) or voice over the Internet (VoI).

Rest in Next .....
