IE7 Update Question ...

Microsoft state that Internet Explorer 7 will distribute as a high-priority
update via Automatic Updates. To prevent automatic deployment of IE7
update, Microsoft list various options for blocking this update which
includes the update management solution using Windows Server Update Services
(WSUS).

Can anyone tell me what classification a high-priority update has?

I have recently implemented WSUS in our network but the classifications for
updates are as follows ...

Critical Updates
Definition Updates
Drivers
Feature Packs
Security Updates
Service Packs
Tools
Update Rollups
Updates

I need to block the IE7 update as it is known that a corporate product we
use will not work with IE7 and therefore I need to know which of the above
classifications need to be blocked to prevent automatic rollout of IE7.

Thanks.

You don't block anything. With WSUS nothings get applied unless you approve
it yourself. You should never set anything to automatically approve.
Priorities and "critical" really don't mean squat if you stay in control of
what is approved or not approved.

If you have WSUS, you can specifically do not approve the IE7 update, that
is as long as you are not allowing WSUS to auto approve all updates. I have
setup WSUS using GPOs for two different customers configured as such to not
allow auto approval, but rather manually go into WSUS and decide which
updates I will approve when I receive email notification (Microsoft security
notification) that new updates are available and research them a bit prior
to approving them. All updates are clearly and specifically described and
individualized. Needless to say I do not allow servers to be updated by WSUS
and would rather do them manually off hours.
