Ok here's the deal. I'm running XP home edition on a
Compaq w/ a 2.2G P4. I downloaded the SP2 for windows 2
days ago and as soon as I did everything went to hell.
(I'm afraid now that it may have been a beta version even
though the claimed it wasn't.
http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?i...&category=main.
This is the site it came from. Anyway I deleted it because
I couldn't get my broadband to connect. The problem is now
eerytime I go into a site with SSL encryption it says that
my proxy settings are incorrect blah blah blah. But I can
get to most normal sites and most importantly I'm NOT set
up through a proxy server at all and I didn't have this
problem before. I went into IE and re-setup my connections
and I do have the proxy box unchecked. I'm at a complete
loss at what to do about this, so if you guys could pleae
*dumb* this down for me I would be very greatfull!! Sorry
for the long post. Thanks in advance for your help.

Apparently that's what you get for downloading an illegal build. You should
get the proper drivers from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/br...DLoadMain.mspx Use
a Restore Point in System Restore to roll back before installing that
software, then update with the proper Microsoft release.

Thanks for the help Chris. I'll try that out and post back
after I get it to work again.

The best thing to do, given the uncertain nature of the update you
downloaded is to format and start again. If you can't do that,
uninstall it and at the very least should run a virus scanner and
spyware scanner if you downloaded from any place other than Microsoft.

Sites like neowin or any of the hacker downloads they posted and
claimed were "download mirrors" are not authorized to distribute SP2.
