I have Win98 SE on the bedroom system. It has a D-Link exteme G, PCI card in
it.The main system that is hooked up to the D-Link extreme G router is in
the basement. It has XP Pro and runs great.
My problem is that IE and MSN Messenger on the Win 98 system constantly
crash.
Is this a common problem with wireless and Win 98?
Any ideas about how to fix the problem?
There is no problem with the signal. It is always good to excellent.
Turning off WEP makes no difference.
I'd appreciate any ideas you may have.
Thanks,
Larry

Not without some details as to how exactly it crashes...

How exactly do IE and Msgr crash? Do they behave the same way on a wired
LAN connection? If so, the more common cause of IE crashes is IE 'helpers',
usually in the form of spyware. Run Spybot, Ad-Aware, CWShredder, Hijack
This, etc. and remove stuff you don't need.

Thanks for this. I doubt that it could be spyware since the Win 98 install
is new. The problem happened the same evening that I installed and updated
Windows.
What happens is a message box comes up on the screen. It says something
like, IE has had a problem and must shut down. It askes if I would like to
send a report to Microsoft and once I say yes or no, IE shuts down and opens
again.
I have had this system with the earier install of Windows, as well as the
new install, hooked up to the cable modem with a cable and had no problems.
Other than adding some ram and installing XP, is there anything else I
should try?

Hoffman,

Try this: go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and highlight Microsoft
Internet Explorer. Press the Add/Remove button and you will get options to
Add a component, Repair Internet Explorer and Restore the previous Windows
configuration. Choose Repair Internet Explorer and press OK. This should
fix it. While you're at it, D/L Internet Explorer 6, Outlook Express 6 and
Internet Explorer 6 SP1.

Some programs, like Acrobat, will screw up IE. I found out the hard way!

I did try the repair and have downloaded all the IE updates, critical
updates etc. I'll do the repair again and
delete Acrobat and see if that helps. I can always install it again.
Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if there is an improvement.
