Other than a mac address, what else can be used to ID an individual
computer when connecting to a public AP from a win98se box?

What does this question mean: How can the AP know that the client runs
win98?

Hi
The worse of all is File Sharing.
I.e., if you computer's hard drive is configured for open sharing at your
home/work, everybody would share your data on an Open AP too.

If you click on: http://extremetracking.com/open?login=bhughes3 then
open the IPs under "the last twenty" you will see what I see on you if you
were to go to: http://www.billhughes.com/jeep_bookmark.htm First.

There is something called an OS signature that identifies I think the
operating system of the computer associating to the AP. There are also
ways to identify the system accessing the AP. I think it is by patterns
of data transmission. Falls under the rubric of rogue device detection
on wireless networks.
