identifying the smtp server

Uh, kind of funny situation here. I started to do some smtp localhost
testing. It wouldn't do anything without authentication and didn't
recognize any of my local accounts. Even with straight ahead telnet
(c:\>telnet localhost 25) Strange I thought.

I then noticed my standard smtp service in services was not started as
I did a while ago. IIS virtual smtp is not started either. So who is
handling these smtp requests?

I have a bunch of additional stuff on my pc, such as php, .net, etc
that I imagine handle email for their respective environments.

How can identify this service? The only seemingly unique indicator is:

220 127.0.0.1 SMTP ready to roll

Any help, much appreciated.

Well, in this specific situation, it was a program called 'hotmail
popper'. I found it by starting to click off every bleeping program and
process, so I'm still curious as if there is a better way then this,
uhm, rather labor intensive method. so?

Use ActivePorts to see what process is listening on port 25.
