I have set up my desktop(Win 98SE) to network with my laptop (Win XP)
and can transfer files okay via shared directory in the W98SE.
Ping works okay.
The W98SE has the IP 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0.
The XP is assigned automatically by the W98SE
IP address 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
DHCP Server 192.168.0.1
DNS server 192.168.0.1
Also the XP has no problem detect message in the repair window in the
local area connection status.

The W98SE is connected to the network via an analog modem and is
functioning okay.

In the past ICS worked okay with this configuration. After upgarding
the disk of the W98SE, I re-installed W98SE + internet explorer update
and ICS does not work.

When it worked I used to get a message on the W98SE that another
computer has been connected to ICS. I don't get it any more.

Here is my registry for ICS
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\ICSharing\Settings\General]

Un-install ICS on W98SE, reboot, and re-install ICS.

Disable and then enable the LAN connection on WinXP. Connect to the
Internet on W98SE, then try these tests on WinXP:

1. Right click the local area network connection and click Status |
Support | Details. It should show:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1

2. Open a command prompt window and enter these lines. Each one
should get four replies:

ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.99
ping google.com

4. Enter these addresses in Internet Explorer. They should both take
you to the Google web page:

Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group

Dear Steve your replay helped me a lot. The ICS works better but still
I have some problems.
The current status is that I am able to access some web site and unable
to reach others.

First on the ICS host W98SE microsoft internet connection status says:
2 computers are sharing the internet connection.

This is the XP (client) ipconfig /all
$ ipconfig /all

Ping to google works and I am able to view it. I can not see many other
web sites like hotmail.com.

$ ping 192.168.0.1

Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Pinging google.com [216.239.37.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=344ms TTL=245
Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=329ms TTL=245

Reply from 216.239.37.99: bytes=32 time=334ms TTL=245

Ping statistics for 216.239.37.99:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 329ms, Maximum = 344ms, Average = 336ms

But ....
ping hotmail.com

Pinging hotmail.com [64.4.32.7] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 64.4.32.7:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
And I assume this is the reason for not seeing the web site.

I'll be happy for some directions how to overcome it.

Thnaks

If your time is worth anything, get a router and forget about ICS.

I have noticed that the DNS server is 192.168.0.1 on client XP, which
is not the case in the host W98se (192.115.106.35 which I got from the
ISP).
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

hotmail.com along with microsoft.com and others will drop pings
without replying. This is not a fault at your end.

The ipconfig information for XP is fine. Microsoft has programmed the
Hotmail web site to ignore pings, so the ping results that you're
seeing are normal.

What exactly happens if you enter these addresses in Internet Explorer
on each computer?

That's normal. The ICS host computer uses your ISP's DNS server. The
ICS client computer uses the host computer as its DNS server. The
host computer relays the client's DNS queries to your ISP.

CJT, I agree that a router is usually more reliable and easier to set
up than ICS. However, Pinhas connects to the Internet through an
analog modem, not through broadband. Most home routers only work with
broadband.

Here's a router that has a built-in analog modem and lets two
computers (or more, if you add a network switch) share a dial-up
Internet connection:
