Would appreciate a little help from some of you experts.....

I have host machine running win98se.
this has a dsl connection to the internet and a wireless lan at home.
lan works fine, complete with print sharing etc.

Until just recently I've been using a software proxy server to share
connections and this has worked fine except that I cannot get ports to close
securely.

Anyhow, am now trying to get ICS running.

Have installed it OK (?) and the host PC still works fine.

Internal lan still is fine

Client PC runs XPpro.

On the client PC, I can read newsgroups, read mail but cannot send either.
I also cannot access any www pages.
I can ping an IP address and a name (eg ping www.google.com) and this is
fine.

Where should I look for the settings to spark this into life ?? clent,
host...both

Any pointers would be appreciated

Thanks

From your description, it doesn't appear to be a problem with ics. Are
you running a firewall? If so check its configuration or preferably
uninstall it until the problem is resolved.

Yes, I'm running Norton NIS2003
I've disabled the firewall, though not deleted it - should that make a
difference ?

If so, then when I add the firewall back, won't that just mess things up
again ??

Apologies if these are dumb questions and thanks for your halp

Regards.

Sometimes it does. You can't be sure unless you remove it.

A misbehaving firewall often turns out to be the culprit when these
sort of things happen. Simply removing and re-installing can often
correct the problem.
