Helping someone with a Windows peertopeer network and ICS running. The
host is a WIN98SE machine with a dial-up modem in it. There are 2 other
computers on the network, a WIN98 and a WINXP machine. According to the
people in the office they always have to turn the host computer on and
have it connect to the internet so they can use the internet. I thought
wiith ICS and a dial-up modem that the host computer had to be turned
on, but the other clients could dial up the modem through the network to
connect to the internet.

How is this supposed to work?

Ron

There is a setting in Internet Explorer Tools Options Connections to
dial on demand or don't dial. You need to change this. Bear in mind
though that the connection also needs to be hung up when the remote
machines are finished. There is a free remote disconnection utility
available from

If possible, I recommend making the WINXP machine the ICS host instead
of WIN98SE. WINXP's version of ICS is much easier to set up and much
more reliable than WIN98SE's version, and it allows the client
computer to control (dial and hang up) the host's Internet connection.

An alternative is to use an external hardware modem/router instead of
ICS. I like the Actiontec Dual PC Modem, which can automatically
disconnect from the Internet after the connection has been unused for
a period of time that you specify:

To use more than two computers with the Actiontec, connect a network
hub or switch to one of its LAN ports.
