I have 3 PCs hooked to a Linksys Router
and one linksys access point (for laptops)

All XP All working ok
I have a weekly problem where I lose connection.
IPS Provider says it might be the router.
they will not help till I run system without router.

I want to set up one computer to the cable modem (server)
install a second ethernet card and use that one to the Input
on the Router.
Hook the other computers to the router to access the internet anytime
the main computer in on.

I have tryed this and can access the internet with the server.
and connect to the router with the second card.

BUT the other computers do not find the internet.

Can someone point me in the right directions.

Thanks
Don

You don't really need the router in the setup at all. You can use the
computer with two NICs to work instead of the router. Enable ICS on this
machine and connect the other machines to it (just like they used to connect
to the router).

Internet
|
cable modem
|
"public" NIC
ICS machine
"private" NIC
|
workstations and AP

Do an ipconfig /release on the client machines to release the network
config they got from the router. Then do ipconfig /renew to get a new config
from ICS.

I see your point. You would need a hub or switch. Using the router as a
hub/switch (ie nothing plugged into the WAN port) would work, and should
satisfy your USP, because the router is not connected to them.

I should have added that to use the router as a hub/switch, you would need
to disable DHCP on it. Otherwise both the router and ICS would be available
to reply to DHCP requests (with nasty results).

So got to my router and disable "local DHCP server"
This should fix the conflict.

I also have a Dell gighub (Power connect 2124) I could use
It but I thought the router would add a bit more firewall to the
network.
