ICS Gateway Problem on XP/98 Network

I've just helped a friend set up a 2 user ad-hoc 802.11g wireless network
between machines running 98SE and XP Pro respectively. The dial up modem is
connected to the 98SE PC.

I can connect to the Internet and use Outlook Express from the XP Pro
machine using the dial up connection on the 98 PC so I assume that internet
connection sharing has been configured but I do not see any notification
that a gateway is active in the XP machine's system tray and I can not
terminate the dial up connection after I have closed IE or OE.

Conversely, on my wired home network, where the dial up modem is connected
to my XP Home PC and I can access the internet from the remote 98SE PC, an
Internet Gateway icon is present in the 98SE machine's system tray and I can
open or close the connection as required. (Not sure why, but the gateway
icon only appears in the remote 98 PC's system tray if the host XP PC is
booted up after the 98 PC, but maybe that's a question for another time!).

Is there a way to activate a gateway icon on the remote XP Pro machine on
the wireless network so that I can terminate the connection?

Is the problem caused by having the 98SE PC acting as the host?

Any suggestions to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Garry Douglas

As you've discovered, a 98SE host can't create an Internet Gateway on
other computers. Here are two possible solutions:

1. Install Remote Disconnect Utility on both computers to allow the
client to dial and to hang up the host's connection. Get it here:

2. Make XP the host and 98 SE the client.
