Hi all..

When I wanted to enable ICS in my Windows Server 2003 machine to enable LAN
clients to connect to internet I found that in advance tab of the network
interface doesn't show the frame that let me enable ICS. That frame was shown
before, so something strange happened.

Can you help me please?

I tell you that I have 2 NIC's in the server. Besides both network
connection, I have a broadband connection. This one is what I want to
configure ICS.

ICS service is enabled.

Thanks
Jaime

Did you recently upgrade to SP1 for Server 2003?

A lot of people have had that problem (ics disappearing), including me but
so far the only fix i have found is to uninstall SP1.

Thanks Bo for the tip. In fact I installed Windows 2003 SP1 immediately after
I finished installing O.S.

I will try to uninstall it and see what happen.

You don't use ICS on a Server,...they shouldn't even included it as a
feature,...it is a "home user" technology. When using the Server OS use
RRAS. You cannot have ICS and RRAS trying to do the same job at the same
time.

is the machine a DC? I believe that there's a known issue where ICS isn't
available on DCs which is under consideration for enabling in a future
update.

Hi David,

I note that there was a KB article about ICS not being available on
a DC after SP1. I can't really think of any reason to enable it. ICS is
useless in a domain setup anyway. RRAS/NAT is the only way to go with AD.

It should never have been included witht the Server OS anyway. It is a home
user technology and has no place on the server OS,...it has also cause
endless confusion by the inexperienced where they confuse it with RRAS/NAT
and end up trying to run both together or "blend" them together because they
don't realize they are two different things that are "competeing" and not
"complimenary" with each other.

Let it die a deserving death.

On the other hand, for a small office that doesn't need a lot of the feature
of RRAS, you'll be able to use ICS with the new Windows Firewall. RRAS
requires WF to be disabled.

Sure you might respond that WF doesn't have a place on server either, but
that's a different thread I'm not really interested in getting into

We've had customers request it, so we're considering satisfying those
requests.
