Is it possible in Windows Server 2003 R2 (Standard or Enterprise) to manage
the Internet Connection Sharing DHCP Server properties? For instance is it
possible to leave NAT on a connection enabled while disabling the DHCP
Server, or change the scope on the DHCP Server?

Thanks.

You don't use ICS on a Server OS.
To this day I don't comprehend why they even left ICS in there with the
Server OS.
Windows XP fine,...the Server OS, it just should not been included.

On the Server OS you use RRAS to create a NAT Firewall and use the real DHCP
to handle DHCP

I have a very specific use for it on a Loopback adapter used with Virtual
Server 2005 R2. To my mind RRAS is a bit of overkill just to try and setup a
simple NAT for a VM DC. Sorry that you feel that way.

Well, it makes a difference knowing why you were asking. ICS might be more
reasonable in a Virtual Lab. VirtualPC has a NAT ability built into it so
you don't need to run anything like that on the physical host,...if Virtual
Server has something similar you can use that. I don't personally use
Virtual Server so I can not be specific about that.

As far as ICS, I don't think you can modify how it works,..it pretty much
"is what it is". The early versions of it in Windows 98 you could modify
the IP Range it used,...but later, I think in Windows 2000, they took that
ability away. As far as the DHCP,..it is not a real DHCP that you can do
much with, and I don't know for sure but I really doubt you can disable it
an keep the ICS running.

Hello Thorin,

Why not creating your own NIC in VS and choose the physical NIC, which is
also connected to the internet, as a source for it?

Best regards

I was trying not to create 2 virtual servers to setup the network isolation.
I can create the isolated network by using the physical NIC and then having
a Virtual Server with 2 Virtual NIC's perform RRAS. That would give me a
router that would isolate the network, but at the same time I would have to
run that VM all the time if the other VM's on the Virtual Network wanted to
connect to the outside world. Just seemed to me that this would waste a lot
of the Host Server's resources.
