just setting up a mn-500 base station, had to turn off
ICF on my laptop (XP) to configure the unit. now that I
am up and running, should I turn ICF back on?

ICF provides the same level of firewall protection if not less then the
MN-500 does. I see no point in using a firewall behind another firewall
as that is just asking for problems.

Thanks for answering.
I am on a laptop and will be using wifi while traveling,
shouldn't I have the firewall on for this? if I just
leave it on will it 'hurt' my local wireless connection?

it can cause problems while at home with file & printer sharing. You
could just turn it on when you connect in other areas.

WEP is easily breakable (even with MAC filtering on), so
one should assume that is an insecure network unless your
location is isolated from strangers (i.e. no street
nearby, no neighbors within the wireless range, etc).

Even without logging into the wireless network, it is
possible to capture and decode the data being
transmitted -- this may not be important for gaming, but
if transmitting confidential documents it becomes
critical.

On my network I turned on ICF and established a VPN
between the computers. The other way around is to change
WEP key very frequently (at least daily, but the actual
time depends on how much data is exchanged in the
wireless LAN).
