IBM 380XD and 3COM Lan Card

I cannot get my 380XD laptops to recgonize and use 3COM
3CCE589ET LAN cards. Device Manger query informs me that
NDIS.VXD and NTKERN.VXD can not load the drivers. I have
been installing Win98 2nd Edition

The only other datum I can think of that could be
significant is that a small section of RAM is
unaccessible, I'm assuming it is reserved by the BIOS.

Can anyone offer some help? I have tried a few different
appraoches to seting up Windows, mostly trying different
network options, but nothing is making any difference.
