I've used some iBlitzz wireless products for the last 2 months and
thought I'd share some of the issues i've had with them (not all bad).
I purchased a BWA611B access point which is really an Abocom ARM804
(
www.abocom.com). I also bought a BWU613B USB adapter which is really
an AIN communications AWU2000b (
www.aincomm.com.tw). I also had two
BWP612 cardbus adapters (Realtek 8180 chipset) briefly.
The USB adapters worked quite well and I have since purchased three
but I can't credit iBlitzz because they simply purchased an existing
product and renamed it (which is common in today's market). The
problem I had in general with the wirless network was communication
speed. I have one client wired to the iBlitzz (Abocom) Wireless
Access Point (WAP) and three wireless clients. Oddly I had trouble
sharing a 67 KByte DSL connection until I reduced the wirless clients
speed to 2 Mbit from a maximum 11 Mbit rate. This was of no concern
since the wireless clients only need to get at the 67 Kbyte internet
connection. I don't have much in the way of filesharing and no server
computer.
The real trouble I had was with Peer to Peer (P2P) filesharing
programs running from the wired client. I had to port forward to the
wired computer from both the Actiontec 1524 DSL modem and the iBlitzz
WAP. With this arrangement the wireless router gave 99% of the
available bandwidth to that computer. None of the wireless clients
could connect regardless of what the upload speed was set to (which
was well below the available upload rate of the internet connection).
Unfortunately both of the iBlitzz BWP612 cards appeared to be
defective. Neither worked on my laptop computer although a USB2
cardbus adapter worked fine. iBlitzz tech support recommended that I
return them to the store of purchase.
I eventually added a Zonet ZEW1000WU cardbus wireless card to my
network and saw the exact same issue with poor bandwidth allocation
from the iBlitzz Wireless Access Point. In the end I opted to take
the BWA611B back to the point of purchase and got a Linksys BEFW11S4.
The Linksys does a really good job with bandwidth allocation and even
with P2P running on the wired client the wireless clients have no
problems accessing the internet.
There were features that the iBlitzz router had that I miss today.
Not only could wireless clients be limited but time of day internet
access restrictions could be imposed. The one shining point of the
Linksys is the ability to disable SSID transmission which makes the
limited 128 WEP encryption a bit more secure. I was able to limit the
wireless access rate to 2 Mbit in the Linksys router to improve
wireless connections. There must be some form of nearby interference
because the higher connection speed always resulted in an unreliable
wireless connection.
The only other problem with P2P was the Actiontec Qwest firmware
revision of 1.60.10.0.69. I could only use eMule with UDP packets
disabled, otherwise the modem would hang. This has since been
resolved with firmware 1.60.10.0.71.
Another problem arose after changing routers. The Zonet wirless card
had an excellent connection with the iBlitzz but shows a wildly
variating connection with the Linksys. Even so the Zonet card seems
to work perfectly so I just ignore the connection quality.
For what it's worth.
