hypothetical about static IPs and home networks

Hi,

Let's suppose I assign a static local IP address, "A" to a Fedora Core
5 Linux machine on my home network. Then I power down the machine.
Then I restart my router, which then assigns address "A" to some other
machine. Then I re-power the Fedora box. What happens? There is a
conflict but how does it get resolved?

How do I avoid a situation like this?

Thanks, - Dave

Make sure that the router's DHCP IP address pool does not overlap
your fixed LAN IP address assignments.

It is a mess. Whichever of those two machines grabs the packet first will
try to respond, and mess up the other. It is not a good idea.

Do not assign to your FC5 machine an IP address that your router could
assign to another machine. Keep the dynamic IP address space separate from
the static space.
