I've finally got my cabled network, ICS and hub pretty stable and working
reliably, thanks to much help and useful information gleaned from this NG.
Thanks to all who come up with the goods.

The hub is now powered 24/7. That and switching ZoneAlarm to 'Medium' seems
to be the final tweek.

This leads me to one final (don't believe that!) question: Since leaving
the hub powered 24/7 leads to far less hassle, does this mean that said hub
actually 'stores' information about the LAN? Or is it purely some gubbins
that connects the machines to each other?

Thanks agin folks,

Alan S.

Unless its a managed hub, which I seriously doubt, its just gubbins.

Thanks Tugger, reassuring if there's a power loss!

Bog all stored in a hub.
A switch does learn some information , but it will relearn that the first
time the pcs are powered up so nothing to worry about.
