Let us hope so!

BTW, do you realize that you are using what seems to be your real mail
address for this post? (better not do that, spammers quite like the
goldmine that's called usenet)...

A few other laptop makers have preloaded Linux distros in the past.
While it's nice to escape paying the Windoze tax, there's not much
advantage over a DIY installation, unless you happen to want to run
SuSe. Also, the laptop itself is not terribly interesting. I'd be a
lot more excited if they offered Linux preinstalls for their Athlon-64
laptops. But the Athlon-64 seem to have proprietary peripherals out
the wazoo, that can't be supported except through closed-source drivers.

Gerard -

It might not be impossible to see that happen within a few more
years...

On a separate note, how do I use a fake address like
"(E-Mail Removed)? Please let me know...

Thanks,

F.

1) Don't use spam.com. Someone owns that, and has to deal with all the
spam. Use something clearly invalid. spam.invalid is an excellent choice.
(E-Mail Removed)lid for instance.

2) Set the From: email address in your newsreader to this address.

3) Set the Reply-to address to your real address. To get this address, the
spammer has to download the whole message (not just the headers) so they
don't bother. There are plenty of addresses in From: headers they can use
without wasting time downloading bodies.

Or, if you have your own domain, you can do as I have done. My address
gets very little spam (and is valid and checked). It seems it is often
rejected because it has the word 'spam' in there twice.

Unfortunately if you are using Google then you can't. You have to
use proper newsreader software if you want to post under a fake
address, since Google will not let you register without insuring
your address is valid.

However, what you can do with Google is open up a free webmail
account with Hotmail or Yahoo (or anyone really), then change the
email address you are registered under to this new address - then
at least the spam is diverted somewhere else and not mixed in with
all your genuine emails.

Mandrake are selling a PC pre-loaded with Mandrake.

I've wondered about that. I have bought a Dell server w/o Windoze,
communicating my intention to run Linux (SuSE) to the sales droid. I don't
know if somewhere some accountant didn't use that system in a formula to
amortize M$ licensing fees, though. Depends on the deals that were made.
Early on, M$ apparently did have a clause something like: to sell Windoze
you must pay a license fee for every system you sell (unstated? whether
that system runs Windoze, or not). How could we know that we are not still
paying that M$ tax? Lately, I've avoided buying systems with bundled
Windoze, but I cannot be sure that I wasn't given a "bundled" O/S that I
may already have paid for? esp. in cases where they don't actually
subtract it from the selling price. If they charge extra for an XP
"upgrade" but don't for "home"? I think Dell did actually reduce my price.

Hopefully the *nix vendors selling PCs have never entered into those
nefarious deals with M$ and therefore are immune from M$ tax (unless they
are buying systems from another integrator? ...paranoia strikes deep...).
