HP Toolbox and Print Server

I currently have an HP 970cxi connected to my PC via USB and I share
it across my home network so that my son can also use it. This works
fine except of course, my PC has to be on for him to use it.

If I connect the printer to a network print server, does the HP
Toolbox still work? Also, does the printer auto-power up when a print
job is sent to it if I connect it via a print server?

Thanks,

Pete

I have the same model connected to my network and I can access it and print
to it from any machine.
Sending a print job to the printer will "wake it up" and it'll print fine.
I use an HP Jetdirect 170X print server.

I've got the HP Jetdirect 170X Print Server and the printer does
indeed power up when a print is sent across the network.

However, not all the functions in the toolbox work, particularly the
ink level monitor (the toolbox complains that it can't establish
two-way communication with the printer). I sort of suspected that this
one function was going to be difficult, if not impossible, over the
network, but has anyone got any ideas? (I had thought of connecting
the printer to the 170X via the parallel cable for network printing,
and to my PC via USB simultaneously, which I will try over the
weekend. Not sure if the printer will like that though).

For Info for anyone else looking at using a printer server:-

I contacted HP support and, as I suspected, they say that monitoring
the ink level can't be done. The Toolbox needs to establish two-way
communication with the printer to give you ink-level information and
this can't be done via a print server.
