HOT Linksys WAP11

Ok I've determined that the problem I'm having with my TabletPC (with built
in wireless) losing the connection to my Linksys WAP11 access point is
*definitely* due to the access point heating up slowly over about a 36 hour
period.

Problem: TablePC (Motion M1200, sitting on docking station in living room)
starts out with a nice 11 Mbps wireless connection (turning on both the
access point and the M1200 together, after being turned off a few days in
disgust). After 24 hours, the connection has dropped to 5.5 Mbps, and by 36
hours it's down to 1 Mbps after which the wireless network becomes totally
unavailable.

Leaving the M1200 turned on and on it's docking station, I unplugged the
power connector on the WAP11 and left it turned off for about 24 hours.
Plugging the power back in the next day, the M1200 (which was left on this
whole time) almost immediately gets an 11 Mbps network connection. Some 36
hours later, it's gone down to less than 1 Mbps AGAIN and now (as in as I'm
typing this on one of my wired PC) it shows no network connection at all.

The top of the WAP11 seemed awefully warm to the touch so, leaving it
powered up with the M1200 unable to locate an access point at all, I held
the WAP11 in front of a fan for a few minutes (so the air blew thru the
WAP11) and then magically the M1200 gets an 11 Mbps wireless network
connection again. Wow!

So I'm guessing these things can get hot inside and THAT slows them down to
the point where they stop working. I haven't turned the M1200 off all week,
only the WAP11 to let it cool down for a night and then just now holding it
vertically in front of a fan to cool it while powered up. It sure works
magic for my wireless networking experience that's for certain!

So how can I keep it cool constantly? Has anybody else with wireless network
performance issues tried letting their AP cool down by powering it off for a
few hours, or holding it in front of a fan? I'm 100% positive this is what's
been causing me to pull my hair out here!

I'd love to hear how others have solved this heating up problem. My home is
hardly hot... but obviously I'd rather not keep it as cold as say a computer
operations center room would be (what, 65F or something like that?
Brrrrrrrrr!).

Thanks!

ps. No joke, if you're having performance or connection problems with your
wireless network try unplugging the AP for a few hours and then plug it back
in and see what happens. I was quite suprised.

Hello Michael,

I think you have to exchange your WAP11. I have about 12 WAP11's in our
network (9 in house under hot rooftops), and 3 outside in a cabinet. I have
measured temperatures of about 41 C. None of the WAP11 stop functioning....

Regards,

Marcel

It finally burned out completely. Nothing could connect to it. I bought a
new WRT54G Router/AP after Christmas and hooked it up and everything's been
running 11 Mbps since with no wireless connection problems.

The new WRT54G runs cooler than the fried WAP11, but is still warmer than
I'd prefer it be. Oh well.
