hosts file

I have a Millenium computer that does not respect the
hosts file.
In other words, if I put a host entry into this file, I
still cannot ping it by name.

I am editing %SystemRoot%\hosts of course.

Is there another file that would override the normal name
resolution procedures.

Be sure to save the edited file as "hosts", not as "hosts.txt".

What does the entry in the file look like? What exactly happens when
you try to ping the name?
