hosts file : multiple host names for ip address

In the hosts file , is it legal to follow the ip address with multiple host
names ?

example :

127.0.0.1 localhost my_special_hostname


.... or do you have to list them line-by-line :

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 my_special_hostname
