Hello,

I am using Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition (Build 3790) and my server's IP
address is 192.168.1.30.

My HOSTS is as following:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localserver
192.168.1.30 localdesktop

I am only able to "ping localhost". When I ping to localserver and
localdesktop, I am gettng the following message:

Ping request could not find host LOCALSERVER/LOCALDESKTOP. Please check the
name and try again.

Please let me know if anyone has faced this problem and solved it before.

Regards,
Kamlesh

If you are editing your HOSTS file with Notepad, check that Notepad didn't
arbitrarily add a "txt" extension to the filename. Also, check that you are
editing the right HOSTS file in the %system%\system\drivers\etc directory
and that you have permission to SAVE that file.

The filename is correctly saved. I am using the file from correct location
only.
Any more suggestions?

> Great solution!

Thank you.

You provide nothing about your system except that you profess to have a
accurate host file, in the proper location, that is not working.

If you provide more info about your system, maybe someone can help you. Such
as: Are you in a domain or workgroup configuration? Are you running DNS on
your server? Are you running DNS on your router? Are you using DNS from your
ISP? Have you actually assigned the 192* address via TCP/IP properties to
your NIC? How many NICs do you have in your server? What IPs are assigned
to the second one if you have two? What is your system architecture? One
computer? Two computers? Switch? Hub? Internet router?

You simply don't give enough information to go further than ensuring your
hosts file is accurate, which you say it is, so that is the only help I can
provide.

Hi Frankster,

Here's the info that might help you to provide some solutions.

This is happening on my Home PC which is a standalone computer. Pentium 4
Processor (3GHz). I have a single NIC which is used for my Broadband
Internet Connection. I have set the TCP/IP address manually to 192.x.x.x as
specified by my Internet Service Provider. I am using DNS settings from my
ISP.

Do let me know if you need any more information.
Regards,
Kamlesh

I ran into this problem yesterday even though use hosts file for two years.
What I did I removed that hosts file from ...\etc folder and created a new
hosts file out there. Beleive it or not - it worked out.

Hope, it'll help.
Alan.
