Can anyone provide some insight into running a Prism 3 wifi card as an
access point using hostap?

I can use the card fine in managed mode, but when I try to change it to
hostap mode, it appears to come up fine - ifconfig and iwconfig show
normal status - but no communication takes place (pings don't go thorugh
and no other traffic flows.)

I can't help but think I am missing something very, very simple - like a
setting in hostap config....

I have reflashed the card to STA firmware 1.8.4 so I shouldn't have
problems per the hostap README, but it just doesn't work.

As a matter of interest, what command do you give to run in hostap mode?

Last time I built a Linux AP I used master mode. As in:

iwconfig wlan0 mode master

See if this helps:
