Horrific performance of file sharing

Hi,

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 VPS with ample RAM and CPU available in a Tier 1
datacenter / 100mbps connection and I have recently enabled file sharing for
it and opened up the relevant ports to 'anywhere'. Connections can be made -
folders can be read and files transferred.

I am, unfortunately, experiencing quite horrific performance with file
sharing. A small 2k PHP file takes 2 to 5 minutes to transfer from Vista
(and XP) via the shell or the SyncToy.

Likewise, file sharing performance is terrible when using the drive sharing
on the terminal services client.

I notice from Googling that many other people encounter such problems but
there is no solution that has been posted along with them.

Per chance could someone on this newsgroup offer advice?
