Horizontal orientation of WAP antenna for laptop connection??

Any one else tried horizontal placement of one or both WAP antennas for
improving connection to laptops having PCMCIA cards without external
antenna?

I have been fighting poor reception in my house by my daughter's laptop for
months. The WAP is downstairs and her laptop normally in her upstairs
bedroom. I tried a do-it-yourself "corner" antenna. No improvement. Last
night read about reorienting one or both WAP antennas to horizontal. Theory
is that orientation is the same as that of the PCMCIA antenna. Seems to
have improved reception.

Any one else with experience in trying this?

Yes,
There is a polarization that occures.
Think of it like this...

When the Antenna is like this:

|

The waves go out like this:
(((((( | ))))))

So if your daughter is upstairs she's not getting much signal.

Now.. on the other hand.. if you orient it like this:

-

The waves go out like this:

^

^

-

(sorry best drawing I could do heheh).

So yes.. it does make a difference, and (in theory at least) you can
have two access points running on the same channel with horizontal and
veritcal polarization and not have a problem as long as the receiving
antenna is polarized the same. Now thinks like multi-path will affect
this differently... your Milage may vary.

Yes. I now have a Connifer external antenna, and the signal is noticeably
better when it is horizontal than when it was vertical.

With your standard WAP, and the corner reflectors, there is nothing
stopping you from pointing them whichever way best serves the intended
target.

As I mentioned in your earlier thread:
I set my laptop where I wanted it, running vncserver and the signal monitor
included with the card. On the desktop near the WAP, I ran vncserver, so
that I was actually viewing the laptop screen. I maneuvered my antenna
setup to get the best signal in the problem spot.
