My Pipex ADSL line has been down for the last 90 minutes - downstream noise
margin is currently 1dB and hasn't exceed 2dB in all that time.

Should I call Pipex or BT to report this? And anyone got a recommended
number to call to avoid departmental ping pong?

Assuming your telephone is working ok then call pipex.

As expected, pick up the phone to dial tech support and it fixes itself

Check your filters & or phone then....

Remember ADSL problems report to your ISP, telephone problems to BT,
hopefully that way you will avoid any, unnecessary, visit charges. Oh & by
the way if Pipex try & tell you to raise a fault on your ADSL tell them it's
their job as they are BT's customer not you!!!

Try unscrewing the faceplate and remove it carefully. You will find
underneath that there is the test socket that the faceplate plugs into. Plug
the modem in there. This will totally eliminate any wiring or faceplate
problem. I had a similar problem and this proved to be the answer. BT then
came and replaced the faceplate and all was well. It may be a long shot but
is quite easy to try.

if lifting the handset reliably fixes it (raising SNR margin) then
you have a high resistance fault on your phone line and need BT out to
find it and fix it, request via ISP or if you're an Equity member dial
150 and say you can't hear people on the phone and it makes funny
noises.

Thanks for the tip, but it was pick up the DECT phone running on my other
line. My ADSL line has no handsets plugged in on it.
