Homemade Wireless Router with Redirect

I'm looking into building my own wireless router, most likely
based around an old junker P4 and some flavor of linux. I would like
the router to transparently provide access to the internet for
authorized users (probably by mac address) while redirecting
unauthorized users to a page at which they can provide a username and
password (provided beforehand to houseguests) for temporary guest
access.

Does anyone have any idea how to go about this? I have plenty time to
complete the project, but barely know where to start.

Vs going to WalMart (or wherever) and paying $39 for one? Why?

You could do most of that with a firewall distro like IPCop or
Smoothwall - not sure about the wireless tho.

I ran "linux access point" thru Google and came up with a lot of hits
that looked like they'd work.... Let me know how you go

And then I found this;
http://mh-lantech.css-hamburg.de/ipc...Accesspoint_en

An accesspoint addon for IPCop. I didn't read it all the way thru, but
it looks like all you need is a PCI wireless NIC in an IPCop box and
you're away!
