Home wirless network??

Hi,

I am thinking of setting up a wireless network in my home. I have a few
questions that I was wondering if any one can help. My config is a PC
upstairs in the study, a pc downstairs, and an xbox & ps2 down stairs.


What equipment should I get?

Regarding the Xbox and PS2, you'll see two different types of wireless
adapters that will work with them. Some are labelled "Game Adapters" (e.g.

"Works without drivers on PlayStation®2, Xbox?, and GameCube?") but they
are no better than a regular Wirelss Ethernet Bridge
(http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=36&prid=602 -
"Works without drivers on Macintosh®, Windows®, PlayStation®2, Xbox?,
Linux®, network printers ? anything with an Ethernet port!"). Don't let
the black colour trick you into thinking it's more compatible or something.

A wireless router or access point depending if you already have a
broadband router, and a wireless network card for all devices that don't
already have them. You should get something that supports WPA under all
OSes that you run. Do your research here as some "say" they support WPA,
but really don't without 3rd party software (*ahem* Netgear *ahem*). I know
that is general, but so is your question.

A wireless NAT/Router, connected to one of the two PCs directly via ethernet,
will save you the cost of one adapter. Wireless NIC in the other PC.
wireless "Game" adapter for the xbox and ps2, you can move it between them or
get two if you want. Lots of places make 11b or 11g wireless game adapters
including Microsoft's own for the Xbox.

I'd agree with the other posted response, that you want something that really
supports WPA as opposed to something that just claims to. Also I'd lean
towards 11g / 54g stuff rather than just 11b. But as to which brand actually
is the "best", your guess is as good as mine. Make sure whoever you buy from
has a good returns policy to CYA.
