Hi,

I want to set up a simple wireless home network sharing a broadband
'net
connection and would like some advice.

I am currently running one desktop which also runs a web server
(currently
a USB DSL modem) and would like a laptop to be able to wirelessly
access
the broadband connection. Nice to have's would be wireless broadband
access
for a Sony PS2, and potentially an additional desktop also accessing
the
internet connection. I expect that I'll have to replace the USB DSL
modem,
so I've ignored that piece of kit for the purpose of my examples ...

As I understand it these are the options:

Config 1:

Phone point/DSL -wired- DSL modem/router/WAP -wireless- Wireless NIC
(installed in Desktop/Server or laptop as appropriate.)

(With this option the only kit that needs to be 'near' the phone point
is
the DSL modem/router/WAP combo ?)

Config 2:

Phone point/DSL -wired- DSL modem/router(*) -wired Port 1- NIC(in
desktop/server)
-wired Port 2(*)- WAP -wireless- Wireless NIC + laptop

(requires at least 2 ports in modem/router Combo ?)

(With this option the desktop/server DSL modem/router and WAP will all
be 'near' the phone point)

Any comments, additional options or links to articles greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help,

.....

Yes, your USB modem is of no use for networking.
ADSL/modem/router/wifi combos generally have 4 wired ethernet ports.
Draytek Vigor 2600We is highly featured and recommended, but not cheap.
(Netgear is one to avoid.)

Martin

Your ADSL modem only needs to be near the phone point in the sense
that it will be connected by a cable. The signal has come from a 'distant'
telephone exchange so what you add to its distance at home is probably
insignificant.

I cannot agree.
I am using a Netgear ADSL modem/router connected to a Netgear WAP and a
netgear PC wireless card both running 54g
I have been doing this for 12 months without a problem, no problem
whatsoever with Netgear.

Alan
agree on the netgear point - have 5 devices from netgear plus a dell
centrino notebook and the netgear stuff has never let me down (usb adaptor /
pccard / cf card / wifi router)

not sure about support as I've never called them

Thanks for the responses so far ....

I wasn't bothered by the issue of distance, more wanting to confirm
that it was possible to run the DSL/Router/WAP combo with NO
wire-attached PC ie. only wirelessly connected to my PC running the
web server. (Even if it works out more expensive than a wired dsl
modem to PC/separate WAP configuration).

Thanks again ....

Mine didn't work at all, not even the software would load or unistall,
support is in India and all they do is read
the same instructions you have on the CD. After wasting days I returned it.
Netgear launched the DM602 here when it didn't have PPoA to for with UK
ADSL.
Most of the complaints here and on alt.interenet.wireless are about Netgear
firmaware updates to fix problems that either fail or make things worse.
Regards,
Martin

Alan,

Maybe I'm wrong ... I thought that 54g kit had only recently become
widely available ?

Thanks ....

Hmm, AFAIK the Netgear 54g stuff came to UK in May ? And that was before the
802.11g std. got approved.
I certainly had trouble getting hold of it (and then wished I never bothered
!).
Regards,
Martin
