Home wireless network - is a hub necessary?

I currently have an ADSL USB modem broadband connection shared through a
simple home network and an Ethernet crossover cable.

If I attach a wireless access point to the Ethernet port on the ADSL
connected PC, would other PCs then be able to connect wirelessly with
suitable adapters?

I see references to needing a hub, but I can't see why it should be
necessary to have one in this situation, or am I being too optimistic?

Yes. But did you consider buying a wireless router instead?

No, I didn't, what would the advantages be over just an access point?

You wouldn't have to have the server machine (the one with internet)
switched on the whole time.

Plus these router jobbies have built in firewalls etc that help you out
where desktop software ones may not.

Precisely. If you bought a Wireless ADSL Modem Router such as a DLink
DLS 604+ then you wouldn't need a host PC.

Yes, maybe so, but I've already got the modem, and it works. I'm not on
cable so I have to log on anyway.

And if you had an ADSL Modem router, it'd do the logging on.

Basically the router is like a PC. It will be constantly connected, the
DSL connection will be constantly live and when it drops, it'll
automatically reconnect.

And after all, as a Wireless ADSL Modem Router can be bought for the
same price as an access point then why not just do the job properly?
