Home Wireless Network between XP and ME

Hi
I have a new laptop with XP on and a desktop with ME on. I have just
purchased wireless cards for each and have succesfully connected both to my
wireless modem. How do I go about connecting them in a network so that I can
access files on both computers from either machine. Would this be secure
against anyone from the internet accessing my files? I have Kaspersky
Internet Security firewall and AV installed on both machines.
I am a complete novice when it comes to networking!

Is this a wireless modem, or a wireless modem / router? Make and model would be
good here.

If you have a WiFi NAT router, properly setup, with personal firewalls on each
computer, and AV, that's a good start. Layered security is an essential. You
have to protect yourself against folks from the Internet.

WiFi Security is also essential. You also have to protect yourself from your
wireless neighbours.

Setup your network from the bottom up. First physical, then protocols, then
Windows Networking (file sharing).

It seems to me that you are confusing few security issues that are not
related one to the other.

For Internet protection you need Cable/DSL Router, Software Firewall, and
Antivirus/Anti Spyware on each computer. As your post indicated it seem that
you covered this issueWireless security.

Wireless security is Not related to Internet security, if you do not use
Wireless security your whole system is vulnerable to close by Leecher/hacker
regardless of whether you have an Internet connection.

See - I told you I was a complete novice!!!!

It is a wireless modem/router - an Inventel DV4210
(http://www.inventel.com/en/product/d...0_Home_Gateway)

I had some initial problems setting up the internet connection. The
equipment was a bundle from my ISP (Orange/Wanadoo). I fiddled with it for
ages, then suddenly it seemed to work and I don't know how I did it!
