Hi

My daughter attends University and lives with several others in rented
accomodation who are supposedly connected to NTL Broadband.
They each have their own PC's / Laptops with suitable network cards fitted.
However, there is a single router connected the the set top box in the
living room, but only one of the occupants receives a decent signal, the
other have a poor signal.
They have contacted both NTL / Netgear who are not too helpful to say the
least. The router is from Netgear, but on looking at NTL's website display
actiontec as suppliers of router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

John

I assume these are wireless cards? If so what type 11Meg, 22Meg, 54Meg?

I don't think any one guarentees range on these things. If its a typical
house then you would "expect" to get at least "acceptable" coverage, but
this can vary. In particular if its "typical" student accomodation with
several wireless routers interference can cause all sorts of problem. I
assume they have tried different chamnnels? Alternatively it could be a
steel frame building in which case signals might be getting blocked.

Other possibilities are badly placed relative to the aerial. My
understanding is that the standard "little pointer" aerials radiate out as a
sphere with a cone removed directly above and below (i.e. if you're directly
above, don't expect to receive anything).

You might want to try realigning the router aerial to see if you can make
all the PCs fall within the "golden equator" (for want of a better term
;-) ) and see if that helps. Alternatively there are better add-on aerials
for the router which _might_ give overall better performance. If you go
that route, I'd ask about "sale-or-return" .i.e if it doesn't help, can you
send it back.

Paul DS.
