Subject: Home networking router query?
Date: 15 March 2006 15:56

At present I have a working network between my laptop (XP) and my
desktop(98SE) using a crossover cable. I am connected to ADSL Broadband via
a USB connection
Everything is working well.
I am about to replace the Desktop with another desktop but running XP.
I also wanted in future to be able to run each PC independently so I was
planning to use a router.
I would like to get the router working with my present setup before I
purchase the new Desktop.
I have read numerous technical articles which leave me slightly confused as
to what type of router and connections it should have, that I should buy
and what cables I should use.
Can someone give me a simple answer without being referred to another long
article?

I have a small network set up here which would suit you fine

First buy a network switch - mine is an 8 port - meaning I can connect
8 network connections to it

Connect an ADSL router to one of the ports on the switch

Connect all necessary PCs/ Laptops to the router

On PCs/ Laptops set the default gateway to the IP address of the
router

on PCs/ Laptops set to obtain IP address automatically and then set
DHCP on the router

on PCs/ Laptops set to use router ip address as DNS server and then
enable DNS on the router

This is simplified, as I have a domain controller - so I'm a bit more
complex, but something like that SHOULD get you goin gin the right
direction

Thanks for your help
Seems to meet the bill
Does this mean I discard my ADSL/USB modem supplied by my ISP?
If I connect my printer and scanner does this mean more hardware?

Thanks for your help. This looks suitable for my system but do I discard the
ADSL/USB modem supplied by my ISP?

You need to keep it. It will plug into your firewall's outside interface.
The modem is still needed for termination to your ISP's network.

An update on my situation.
Wanadoo have offered a router which has two connections for two pc networked
and an upgrade to up to 8 Mbitsps and no increase in monthly cost.
I have the new router and connected my XP pc first and all working well.
Using the software to connect the 98 I have run into a problem with a fault
message which says that a firewall is running and can't connect.
I have disconnected both Firewalls but still no Joy.
I have tried to connect using the settings for a network but no joy
I am wondering if the previous settings for my network are interfering with
the new settings?
I checked the settings and they seem OK
The primary Network Logon was selected as Client for Microsoft Networks and
not windows logon. Is that correct?

I decided to contact Wanadoo help line again- the last time was hopeless but
this time I had a helpful person who soon established that my 98SE desktop
did not have enough memory so am having to replace my 5 year old Desktop. I
was considering doing this anyway.
Thanks to all who helped
