Home Networking Problem

I'm no network guru - I have a basic setup that was fine for a while that
recently developed a problem and I have no idea what to try.

Here's the setup: I have a DLink wireless router connected to my cable
modem, allowing access from a laptop. I have a DLink switch cabled to the
router, and two desktop computers (A and B) cabled to the switch. Computer A
has the monitor, keyboard and mouse and access to computer B is done from
computer A via Remote Desktop Connection (had a KVM switch once, but it
stopped working). Computers A, B and the laptop all run Windows XP with
current updates.

I was using computer A to download some files from work over the weekend and
I noticed that it stopped during the download. I could not get it to access
the internet, though device manager thinks all is well. Even after a reboot.

The laptop gets to the internet fine.

Computer B gets to the internet fine.

Computer A can remote into computer B with no problems

If I remote into computer B from a different machine, I can then use it to
remote into computer A with no problems

Computer B can get to the router admin page (using IE) OK, but computer A
cannot.

I tried switching cables between computer A and B, and switching the jacks
used on the switch - no difference.

So it seems A just can't get beyond the switch, though B can.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

Can you ping all computers by ip address and also the router from computer A?

I can ping computer B from computer A by ip address and name (though it
takes a while to resolve the name)

I cannot ping the router from computer A by ip address

Hello CapCity,

Well you have found the problem. Check that the switch ports you use are
not some uplink connection that will work switch internal but not to the
router. Also make sure that no firewall is blocking the icmp protocol.

I bypassed the switch all together, plugging computer A into the router - no
change. Wasn't the switch.

Computer B's network connection is via a USB device so I plugged that into
computer A and it seems to be working fine.
