Home Networking Problem

Hello All,

I have a Home Network set up at present. This is a wired network via
Ethernet cards and cables:-

Broadband comes in via an NTL set top box and connects to PC1 via ethernet.
This PC then acts as a server. A second cable comes out via Ethernet to a
Network Hub - here I have four other PC's connected via that hub, via
Ethernet, and the whole thing works a treat!! I share the Internet from PC1
and all other PC's sit really well on the network without any hitches.

I now have a Laptop with a a Wireless card in it - I want to add this to the
network. I have a Wireless USB device that I have fitted to PC1 and
configured to connect PC to PC on an Ad-hoc network. I have then run the
Networking Wizard accross my three Network conenctions on PC1 (Remember I
have a Ethernet In, and Ethernet out and now a USB out) - The Networking
wizard seems to work fine - it finds the correct card to share and creates a
network bridge between the two 'Outs' - The correct IP is assigned to the
bridge (192.168.0.1). The four PC's connected via a Hub all work and can
see the Internet - each getting a correct IP address (192.168.0...2-249)
however the Laptop cannot see the Internet - It connects to the Network, is
assigned an IP address inthe correct Range (192.168... etc) - It also cannot
share resources (file and Printer) with the other PC's, returning the
'Cannot connect, you may not have sufficient...etc' message.

To do some digging around this, I disabled my second Ethernet card and set
up a home network using just Ethernet (In) and Wireless USB (Out) - the
laptop found it straight away, assigned it an Ip and hey presto - the laptop
acts as normal on the network, full Internet and resource access. Put the
other Ethernet back on the network, Internet fails again.

All PC's are running Windows XP Pro - PC1 has SP2, the four PC's connected
via the Hub are various buiold between original build, SP1 and Sp2 and the
Laptop is just on original Buiold (will not accept SP1 or 2 - keeps
crashing - it's an old IBM Thinkpad 600X)

And before you Router advocates start, I know I would be much better with a
Router but my current set up suits me fine - I want PC1 to act as a server -
It helps me control the access and usage of the other PC's (kids) plus it
isn't just a case of buying a router, I've already spent money on the
Network I have so if I can tweak this and get it working, i;d be much
happier.

Anyone got any idea's?

Thanks in advance

Richard

Lunch was nice;

If it was me - I would try and get a WAP to plug into the hub! It's got to
be easier!

If that isn't an option you may have to fiddle with route settings. I've
never used one of these cards before so can you tell me if the USB device
appears as an ethernet card? Is the IP address configurable?

What OS is PC1 running and what software are you using to allow PC1 to
become a router?

Yeah, What on earth were you thinking, Mysteron? Can't you tell that
they're all angst-filled teenagers who are only interested in using
their favourite four-letter words in reply to every post that appears?

I'm not entirely convinced that XP Pro supports multi-homing - I was under
the impression that MS had deliberately crippled it, along with the
connection limit for the mini-IIS.

If the "etc" part of the address is in the correct (zero) subnet, then this
might well be your problem.

Standing by to be corrected..

XP Pro supports 10 simultaneous connections per host. If he has a shared
printer and a few shared directories, plus five internet connections through
th eone machine, that'll cause his problem.

That aside, about the statement "I'm not entirely convinced that XP Pro
supports multi-homing - I was under the impression that MS had deliberately
crippled it, along with the connection limit for the mini-IIS." Is that hot
air or shit blowing out your ears?

they were saying :

XP Home certainly does - but I don't use it for ICS. One wireless card, one
10Mb cheapy for the laserjet.

Glad to be of service...
