I'm relatively new to home networking (pardon the M$-speak!) and also to
Linux. Before I start asking too many hard questions, I'd like to know what
is possible with two PCs and a crossover cable.
I managed to set up simple file sharing (with NFS) between my PC and laptop,
both running Mdk 10. Both machines have fixed IPs. I then tried sharing my
dial-up internet connection by manually editing iptables. It worked for a
while but it was unreliable - it appeared as though the file sharing was
interfering with the internet sharing, or vice versa, and depended on which
machine was booted first, and when the dial-up connection was established
etc. etc.
What is the best way of setting up a network between two PCs? Ideally I want
the desktop to be the server and allow the laptop to connect/disconnect at
any time without having to reboot or perform any complicated network
restarting procedures. Is this possible, or does it have to be based on an
NFS type arrangement, in which I'll have to manually mount the shared
directories everytime I plug in?
TIA
