Some help please - I want to set-up a file sharing service on a 'server' PC
on a 3 PC 'network'.

I am running a Belkin F5D7630 ADSL router via an RJ45 cable to a desktop Pc
running XP, and I have two laptops running wireless cards picking up a
broadband connection directly from the router. All broadband connections
work great - I love this wireless stuff !

However, I also want to use a portion of the dektop disk to share files with
the laptops. I have enabled file sharing on all devices, and set-up a
workgroup name, but for some reason when I run the set-up wizard on the
desktop, ie the host, it tells me that it needs both a connction to the
internet and a connection to the network I am setting up (!).

Has anybody encountered this ? Anyone have advice ?

Thanks muchly in advance.

Ian

Hi Ian, don't know about your router or the wizard cos I've never used it!

I use the following method and I have few problems.
Enable DHCP on the router and set and note the IP address (normally
192.168.0.1 / 255 255 255 0 is used)

On each machine -

In My Computer -> View System Properties -> Computer Name, give each pc an
unique name and make sure the workgroup name is the same on each machine
(default is MSHOME but can be changed to suit yourself)

In control panel -> Network connections -> Local Area Connection ->
Properties, Install Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing
and TCP/IP Protocol.

Double click TCP/IP and select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain
DNS Server address automatically.

You may need to reboot after this.

Right Click any folders you need to share goto Sharing and Security and tick
Share this Folder on a Network.

And that should be it! All shared folders should appear in Network
Neighbourhood.

I'm sure if I've omitted something it will be pointed out!
